Breakups can be very difficult. Not only do you need to try to get over your ex, you also need to learn to live without them. Most couples have a routine. Days that they spend together and date nights are common. After a breakup, you need to learn to get passed these routines, and start new ones. There are a few steps that you can take to move on after a breakup.

Accept that it is Normal to Have an Emotional Reaction

After a breakup, whether you were the one who ended things or not, it is normal to have an emotional reaction. The sooner you realize that it is normal, the better. Often times, people will try to push their emotions aside, and pretend that everything is fine. This is not helpful when trying to move on. Giving yourself time to grieve, and really feel the emotions is the first step towards moving on.

Don’t Blame Yourself

After a breakup, many people will blame themselves. You may think that if you had done something different, or if you did more, that maybe you would still be together. This is not helpful when trying to move on. In most cases, it is your ex’s issues and not you. The sooner you stop the blame game, the sooner you will move on.

Learn to Love Yourself

The sooner you learn that you do not need another person to complete you, the better off you will be. If you learn to love yourself, and realize that you do not need to be defined by your relationship, the sooner you will be able to move on with your life.

Avoid Seeing Your Ex

If you are planning a night out with friends, it is a good idea to avoid going to places where your ex may be. The more you see them, the more difficult it will be to move on.

Stop the Calls and Texts

After a breakup, the best thing that you can do is stop all communication. If you continue calling and texting your ex, you will have more trouble moving on. You may think that an innocent text or phone call won’t hurt, but it will. Stopping all communication will make moving on easier.

Don’t Try to Be Friends

You may think that being friends after a breakup is a good idea. While you may still want your ex in your life, it can make things very complicated. Maybe a friendship is possible in the future, however, if you are just getting out of the relationship, putting as much space between you and your ex is the best way to move on.

Breakups can be very hard. The sooner you are able to move on from the breakup, the happier you will be.
